Writing an Essay for History Class

Important to Remember:
1. This is NOT a creative writing assignment.

2. Facts are more important than anything!

3. Use paragraphs to organize your reasoning.

4. Do NOT repeat yourself (unless you are somehow restating your argument)

5. Come up with a strong introductory statement and back it up with facts you have learned from class.

6. An outline is the most helpful and useful way to prepare for not only each essay, but also the test. We will do a sample one in class together.

Organization:

I will not be picky about a certain number of paragraphs in each essay. Instead, I will look for the following:

  1. A strong opening paragraph that states your introductory statement and then briefly how you plan to defend it (like a small preview of each supporting paragraph)

  1. Supporting paragraphs that state reasons (facts) which support your main argument. Its important that the supporting paragraphs do not repeat themselves (each paragraph should be different from the other)

  1. A very brief closing paragraph that summarizes (but doesn’t repeat word for word) your essay.
